Château d'Or et de Gueules was born in 1998. The name comes from the family crest of Diane de Puymorin, with its colours reflecting the personality of the wines she produces - gold ('Or' in French) to signify the depth and fullness of the southern sun and warmth, red ('Gueules' in old French) for the character, power and roundness. The wines of Château d'Or et de Gueules have their own personality. Whether red, white or rosé, they are stamped with personality - full and subtle. The wines have real structure which expresses itself with elegance and finesse. The property lies on the southern side of the Costières de Nîmes, between St Gilles and Generac, close to the Camargue. The vineyards face south and south-east on a terroir of galets roulés (the famous rounded pebbles also found in areas such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape).
Made from Syrah 45%, Old Carignan 35%, Grenache 20%, the grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine is aged in tank for 2 years in order to smooth the tannins.
Deep coloured, spicy and concentrated in the mouth with very good length. There is a complex nose of dark fruits, freshly cracked black pepper and herbs de Provence. The palate is full bodied with rich, juicy fruit filling the mouth. This wine is really ample and savoury, yet quite elegant. Received a commendation at the 2008 Decanter World Wine Awards.
Food Match: steak, lamb, casseroles.
