CARM - Casa Agrícola Roboredo Madeira, Lda is a strictly family concern, having been in the same family since business began in the middle of the 17th century. Farming activity has always been centred on the region in which the river Douro flows into Portugal, where the world's oldest denomination also has its origin, the "Região Demarcada do Douro" of Port wine.
The Winery - CARM built a new winery in 2004. It was an important step towards producing top quality wines. Located at Quinta das Marvalhas, in Almendra, it borders the Douro International Natural Park, and offers some of the most spectacular views of the Douro Valley. The modern technology is an important tool in making wines that fully express the characteristics of our traditional Portuguese grape varieties.
The choice of the location was based in two important factors: On the one hand its central postion in relation to all the different family vineyards, allowing that way a quick transportation of the grapes during the harvest. On the other hand its elevation (400 metres) and northeast facing, which help minimize the heat effects during the extremely dry and hot summers in the region ( often over 40oC in the shade!).
Made from local grapes that even some locals have never heard of - Verdelho, Siria and Rabigato, from 60 year old vines in the Douro valley. Deep yellow in colour, this is a lovely aromatic white, slightly grassy, with pear flavours and good body, developing nice nutty, honeyed tones on the palate. This vineyard is also certified as 'biodynamic', meaning they use 75% less chemicals and preservatives than would normally be used in the production of wine. It even ages well!
Food Match: Indian and Chinese, chicken.
